Silicon Carbide and Film Backing

3M Microfinishing PSA Film Disc 468L is crafted using micron-graded silicon carbide, a synthetic mineral known for its fast cutting and smooth finishing capabilities. This mineral is highly favored by industrial professionals for low-pressure applications like sanding and finishing during paint preparation. While silicon carbide may break down faster than aluminum oxide, it produces a brighter finish.

The Film Disc 468L features a 3 mil film backing that flexes to ensure a consistent finish over contours. Compared to paper products, this film backing offers greater tear-resistance, making it ideal for high-production environments.

Designed to be compatible with various tools including rotary, orbital, and random orbital sanders, this abrasive is available in a range of micron grades for comprehensive multi-step sanding and finishing. The pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) provides easy and secure attachment, keeping the disc in place during use, and can be cleanly removed from the backup pad (sold separately).

Open Coat Construction

Abrasives perform better and last longer when the cutting surface is not clogged with dust. The open coat construction of the Film Disc 468L features a less dense coat of abrasive grain, allowing swarf to be easily evacuated from the surface. This prevents the cutting edge of the grain from getting clogged, enabling the abrasive to continue cutting effectively even when sanding softwoods, paints, and other materials that tend to load. This results in improved performance, longer abrasive life, increased productivity, and reduced material consumption.

Easy PSA Attachment and Applications

The pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) on the back of the 3M Microfinishing PSA Film Disc 468L ensures easy attachment to tools. Attaching the disc to your disc pad is a simple process, and it can be peeled off just as easily, leaving a clean surface for the next disc. PSA discs are used in conjunction with a PSA or 3M Stikit backup pad (also known as a disc pad and sold separately) that is attached to a random orbital sander. This versatile disc is suitable for paint preparation, finishing, and repair on wood, clear coats, composites, and plastics.
