What is 3M™ Polyurethane Sealant 540 and how does it work?

Our 3M™ Polyurethane Sealant 540 is a one-component, moisture-curing, gap-filling polyurethane sealant. It forms a permanent elastic bond with excellent adhesion to most surfaces like metal, wood, glass and plastic. This product works by reacting with moisture in the air or substrate surface to form a durable, flexible seal.
Is this product weather-resistant?

Yes! The 3M™ Polyurethane Sealant 540 has excellent resistance to weathering agents such as sunlight and rainwater. It also maintains its flexibility under extreme temperature conditions (-40°F/-40°C up to +194°F/+90°C).
How much area can I cover with one pail of this sealant?

One gallon (4 liters) of our gray-colored polyurethane sealant covers around 12-13 linear feet at a thickness of approximately half an inch. Therefore, you should be able to make about sixty-five feet worth of seals from one five-gallon drum/pail if applied properly. However always read carefully the manufacturer's instructions before use for detailed guidance on application methods

3M™ Polyurethane Sealant 540 is a single-component, moisture-curing, polyurethane sealant used to bond a wide variety of materials, including plastics, fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), sheet molding compound (SMC), aluminum, steel, coated metal and wood. It exhibits high tensile strength, good UV resistance, low Shore A hardness and low modulus to maintain its functionality in a wide range of extreme service environments. Available in cartridge, sausage pack, pail and drum volumes to meet your application needs.

Paintable after Skin Forms for Improved Appearance

3M™ Polyurethane Sealant 540 offers an alternative to mechanical fasteners and can replace rivets in some applications. It will bond dissimilar substrates and a wide selection of materials. This will perform in temperatures ranging from -40°F/-40°C to 194°F/90°C. Once skin forms (60-90 minutes), the sealant can be painted to improve the final finish.
