Featuring the right blend of mineral, backing, and bond, our 3M™ SiC Cloth Belt 490FZ is specifically designed for coarse and intermediate/fine wood sanding operations where a good cut rate and finish are essential. Wide abrasive belts are commonly used with wide belt sanders to dimension or finish wood panels. The cloth belt is available in two weights: ZF-weight (grades P24-P50) or YF-weight (grades P60-P220). Both weights are stiff, sturdy, and durable, with ZF being slightly heavier. These strong backings provide the necessary support for the abrasive side of the belt, ensuring durability in high horsepower applications. When aggressive sanding is required, choose a coarser grade like P24. For a fine finish, opt for a finer grade like P220.
Essential Ingredients: Silicon Carbide and Load-Resistant CoatingWhen it comes to wood applications, achieving fine finishes is crucial. However, having a load-resistant abrasive can also be advantageous during sanding. At 3M, we have carefully selected silicon carbide mineral for our SiC Cloth Belt 490FZ. This hard synthetic mineral offers superior finishes compared to other minerals commonly used in wood sanding. It is considered one of the best minerals available for wood finishing.
To enhance the performance of the mineral, we have incorporated a static-resistant treatment into the belt. This treatment helps the dust collection system effectively remove dust and debris from the mineral, preventing clogging. Additionally, the semi-open coat construction of the belt creates small gaps between the mineral, preventing the abrasive from loading. The mineral is securely bonded to the backing with a resin bond that gradually breaks down during sanding. This bond provides heat resistance and the necessary strength for high horsepower applications.
Combining Science and ArtOverall, the 3M™ SiC Cloth Belt 490FZ is an excellent choice for wood sanding operations that require backing strength and exceptional finishes. The careful combination of mineral, backing, bond, and coating is a result of scientific expertise. However, achieving the best results also requires the application of proper woodworking techniques and processes, which can be considered an art form.
