The 3M Emery Cloth is designed for metal sanding jobs that require durability, such as removing rust and corrosion from metal ideal for auto repair. Its tough emery abrasive combines various mineral oxides and is mounted on durable cloth backing that resists shredding and tearing. All of it is resin cured for overall durability to last much longer than standard sandpaper.

Unlike common sandpaper that can easily fall apart during aggressive sanding, our Emery Cloth features a J-weight cloth backing that is lightweight yet significantly more durable than paper. This makes it ideal for both hand and machine sanding of metal surfaces. The Emery abrasive used in our cloth combines metal oxide minerals, including non-fibrous aluminum oxide, to create a tough abrasive surface that removes stock quickly while leaving a fine finish. With a complete range of grits available, you can choose the perfect option for your specific needs, from fine to coarse.

Why Use an Emery Cloth Instead of Sandpaper?

An emery cloth is specially designed for sanding metal surfaces, offering several advantages over traditional sandpaper. Unlike sandpaper, our Emery Cloth features a durable cloth backing that won't come apart or shred during aggressive sanding, reducing the risk of small fragments being left on the prepared surface. Traditional self-fracturing abrasives used in sandpaper can wear down quickly, whereas our emery abrasive, which includes non-fibrous metal oxide minerals, is extra tough and less prone to breaking off and interfering with subsequent steps in metal paint preparation. Additionally, the entire cloth is resin cured for added durability and resistance to heat, making it particularly beneficial during machine sanding.

About the 3M Body Repair System
