Sharp Mineral for a Smooth Finish

3M designed this roll with silicon carbide, which is second only to diamond in hardness. This mineral's grain is sharp and narrow and easily fractures. The benefit of this "friability" is that fresh, sharp edges are continuously exposed to the work surface. They cut extra fast and produce a smooth, professional-looking finish. Silicon carbide abrasives are commonly used for low-pressure applications such as paint prep and finishing on wood and metal. While the mineral has a shorter life than aluminum oxide, it produces a superior finish.

3M Proprietary Waterproof Backing

3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q abrasive can be used dry or with water. It enables you to rinse areas of the workpiece and the abrasive during use, preventing dust and debris from clogging the face of the abrasive and reducing air-borne dust. It also cools and lubricates the workpiece and produces a faster cut. It has the additional advantage of extending abrasive life. This abrasive roll is backed with a 3M-patented durable waterproof paper backing. Lighter weight than cloth and smooth rather than textured, a paper backing works better for lighter applications like finishing and paint prep. Sanding with water can minimize the effects of dust and clogging of abrasive points.

This abrasive roll comes with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) or regular backing. The PSA backing provides an attachment suitable for high heat and more severe sanding applications.
