-
Can you explain what "5A FIN" means and specify what materials it works best on?
The term "5A FIN" stands for a fine grade abrasiveness which is perfect for metalworking applications where smooth finishes are desired. It works best with hard metals such as steel, stainless steel and titanium among others.
Aluminum Oxide Mineral Has High Cut-Rate, Hardness and Strength
The Scotch-Brite™ Cut and Polish Unitized Block is filled with aluminum oxide abrasive mineral. This mineral is popular among industrial professionals due to its cut-rate and long life. It is a tough, durable abrasive that self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges in use. Traditional abrasives, such as garnet, quickly wear down with use. Aluminum oxide mineral has high cut-rate, hardness, strength, and low heat retention, making it a good choice in grinding applications. It is suitable on a wide variety of substrates in both woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys.
The Cut and Polish Unitized Block is available in two grades – fine (FIN) and medium (MED). Finer grades are used when operators desire a softer cut and finer finish. Conversely, a medium grade would be used when operators desire a more aggressive cut and coarser finish.
Discover the Scotch-Brite™ Advantage
Scotch-Brite™ abrasives are unique due to their nonwoven technology. Abrasive mineral is interspersed on synthetic fibers using resin, creating an open web construction. Spaces between the fibers permit excess material to escape, so the mineral does not become worn down by debris. It keeps the mineral cutting sharper longer, enhancing cut performance and increasing abrasive service life. The spring-like nature of the fibers works well on contours and responds to subtleties on the surface. Its responsive design effectively removes unwanted burrs, soils, and contaminants without ruining the base material, so you get a consistent and uniform finish — part after part.
