3M Disc Pad Face Plate backs a same size fiber disc (sold separately) to provide firm support and the force required for grinding applications. It is used in conjunction with a disc pad hub (sold separately), which attaches to the power tool, and held into place along with the appropriate disc using a retainer nut (sold separately).
- Designed for use with a 3M™ Disc Pad Hub
- Various flexibilities support grinding applications ranging from lightweight to heavy-duty
- Plate accommodates a fiber disc of equal diameter
- Plate color indicates disc density for easy identification in the workroom

PRODUCT FAQ
-
What is the 3M Disc Pad Face Plate Ribbed used for?
The 3M™ Disc Pad Face Plate Ribbed offers firm support for fiber and abrasive discs, which lets you grind and sand metal parts with ease.
-
What size are these face plates?
This is a package of ten extra-hard ribbed disc pad face plates that are designed to fit coast-to-coast on standard 5-inch discs.
-
Can I reuse this product?
Yes! These rugged disc pad face plates grip tight and can be easily cleaned so they last longer than softer pads found in many auto body shops or industrial settings.
-
Are there any temperature limitations when using this product?
There aren't any temperature restrictions when it comes to grinding or sanding metal parts. So long as the part being worked isn't too hot to touch, the 81732L red color-coded pad will provide stable support during use.
Product Description: 3M™ Disc Pad Face Plate Assembly
The 3M™ Disc Pad Face Plate Assembly is a versatile tool that allows for easy changing of the face plate without removing the disc pad hub. This feature enables operators to use a single tool for multiple applications, from heavy grinding to finishing a workpiece.
Some face plates come with ribbing on the bottom face, which provides additional force for optimal fracturing of the abrasive mineral. Ribbed face plates increase the grinding pressure of the abrasive with the same amount of operator effort by reducing the area of contact or pressure per square foot (PSI). This feature extends disc life when dulling is a problem.
It is important to choose a plate with the level of firmness needed for the application. A lighter density face plate is suitable for lighter weight grinding applications, while a harder density face plate is ideal for more heavyweight grinding applications. Using the correct face plate for the application ensures that the abrasive mineral will fracture as it should, maximizing the life of the abrasive.
The plate comes in one of four different colors that indicate the density, making it easy to identify the correct plate in the workroom. The colors are as follows: red = extra hard (for heavy grinding with the coarsest grades), black = hard (for heavy metal removal, large welds, etc.), gray = medium (for general purpose grinding and finishing), and white = soft (for finishing operations on flat or contoured surfaces).
- Red = Extra Hard (for heavy grinding with the coarsest grades)
- Black = Hard (for heavy metal removal, large welds, etc.)
- Gray = Medium (for general purpose grinding and finishing)
- White = Soft (for finishing operations on flat or contoured surfaces)
