Standard Abrasives Multi-Finish Wheel is a low density, durable wheel used primarily for applications requiring a linear scratch and final finish on surfaces where no edges or burrs are present.
- Low density wheel covers more surface area when light pressure is applied
- Silicon carbide mineral, available in a range of grade, cuts sharp for final finishing
- Runs smooth for less operator fatigue
- Non-metallic nylon fibers prevent workpiece contamination, including smears and blemishes
- Open web conforms to workpiece, preventing undercutting and gouging

PRODUCT FAQ
-
What is the size of 3M's Standard Abrasives™ Multi-Finish Wheel 856291, and how many come in a case?
The wheel measures 6 inches by 2 inches by 1 inch, and there are two wheels per case.
-
What kind of finish can I achieve with this multi-finish wheel?
With a combi-random pattern on the abrasive mineral, this multi-finish wheel provides consistent finishes without sacrificing cut rate. It gives you an excellent finish on all metals during final finishing or pre-polishing stages.
-
Is it easy to install onto my bench grinder?
Yes! Installing the Standard Abrasives™ Multi-Finish Wheel 856291 is simple – just attach using standard tools (such as a wrench) for your bench grinder.
-
Can I use this product wet or dry?
This particular standard abrasive scuffing wheel was designed to be used dry with handheld reciprocating sanders and yes, we recommend that it should only be used where adequate ventilation exists such as outdoors.
The Standard Abrasives™ Multi-Finish Wheel is engineered to be a low density wheel, allowing it to conform to the workpiece and leave a soft scratch pattern without significantly altering the part's geometry. During final finishing with this wheel, low pressure should be applied. Additionally, the larger contact patch of the low density wheel allows for greater contact with the workpiece.
Soft Scratch PatternsThe Standard Abrasives™ Multi-Finish Wheel is created by combining silicon carbide mineral and nonwoven nylon fibers with resin to form an open web. The sharp cutting mineral and low pressure result in a soft scratch pattern that is desired during final finishing. The mineral comes in fine (FIN), medium (MED), and coarse (CRS) grades. For a soft scratch pattern, a fine grade should be used, while a coarser grade is recommended for a rougher scratch pattern.
Benefits of Open Web AbrasivesThe nonwoven fibers in the open web break down during use to reveal new mineral, providing a consistent scratch pattern throughout the life of the abrasive. Additionally, the uniform breakdown of the fibers prevents chunking or dusting. The nylon fibers are non-metallic, preventing contamination of metal and avoiding heat-induced smears and blemishes that can result from metal on metal.
The combination of buoyant, responsive nonwoven fibers and sharp-cutting silicon carbide mineral make this abrasive ideal for final finishing. It is effective for blending coated abrasive scratches or blending surfaces to match a #4 mil finish. Other applications include satin finishing on architectural hardware or grain finishes prior to anodizing.
Multiple Industry ApplicationsThe Standard Abrasives™ Multi-Finish Wheel is designed to help users from various industries achieve the final finish they desire. It is suitable for use on door hardware, plumbing fixtures, aluminum extrusions, sanitary metal containers, and dairy equipment, among other workpieces.
